While Alexandria's historical center is (thankfully) removed from most of the pressures of development, there are newer places to live outside the historical district. Just be prepared for some seriously high prices: Alexandria's proximity to DC and the Potomac River, its history and its cultural amenities all make it a very popular place to live.
